Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born within Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artwork and inspiration. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse so she could indulge her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learned by example that art was an avenue for action. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. Even though DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family, she spent every summer with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma led her later on to make a film about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. While she was still an undergraduate student DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home that one of the members of the jury and examine their junk. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay chose to go on to a job in the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired for her first gig as a publicist in small production studios right after graduating from college. In 1999, she established her own firm of public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency has launched a wide range different lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
